I did it! - The 2011 Nautica Malibu Triathlon

I did it, I finished my first triathlon.

My time was 2:52:21, Overall I placed 1364th, in my sex I placed 413th and in my division I placed 77th. I beat my personal goal which was to finish in under 3 hours, but I clearly have tons of room for improvement for next year.

I did not complete my other goal of weighing 150 lb. by the time the race came around. I wanted this race to be the perfect punctuation to my weight loss journey. It was a nice, poetic goal but sometimes life just doesn't work out the way you've planned it.

I can't let this sour my accomplishment, it just gives me more reason to keep trying, keep going and to keep sharing my story with all of you. Below is a video of me crossing the finish line and a slide show of some action shots throughout the day.

This is What I Have Gotten Myself Into - 2010 Nautica Malibu Triathlon

I have so many questions about what to do, where to go, what's allowed, where does my family hang out?? So one of my co-workers sent me this video to check out. I thought I would share it with you all as well. It's a great overview of what the Nautica Triathlon is all about, who competes, what's it for and who won last year. I still have a million questions and I am starting to really get excited for next weekend.

I did the full Tri this past weekend in training. It took me 20 minutes to do the swim, 1:38 to do the bike and 57 minutes to do the "run". I put run in quotes because let's be honest, I was speed walking more than running. I figure it's going to take me about 3 hours to complete the race. The top finishers do it in about 1:30. So I have a loooong way to go to improve for next year.

Cool Workout Music - DJ Synthetic

I am always looking for fresh playlists to workout to. Soundcloud is a treasure trove of amazing mixes that will keep you sweating! My current favorite is DJ Synthetic. I discovered him from the group I spin fire with, Fire Groove. He DJ's the sets every Wednesday night at SpinJam. Anyway, if you are looking for some bumping' tracks, you have to check him out. 18 and over only! He can get pretty raunchy sometimes.

Interesting Exercise to Use When You Need to Make Hard Decisions

Do you go over a lot of what-if scenarios in your head when it comes to making tough decisions? I do this a lot, especially when it comes to work stuff. Some of you make be struggling over if you want to go on this crazy hCG Diet journey. Tim Ferriss says, "Before trying to focus on your goals, first try defining your fears."

Check out what he says in this video:

He does this by using Negative Visualization. In negative visualization you are defining worst case scenarios. He talks pretty fast in this video so below I have captured how to do this below.

  1. Take out a piece of paper and make 3 columns
  2. Detail in the first column all of the terrible things and scenarios that, if you did the thing you are considering (a new job, project, ending a relationship, starting a diet), could happen.
  3. In the 2nd column list all of the things that you can do to minimize the likelihood of the things in column 1 from happening.
  4. In the 3rd column list all the line by line actions you can take to get you back to where you were, to re-achieve all things you need to do to get you back to the status quo. For example it could be getting back into the industry you may leave in order to start your own business.
  5. Look at the 3 lists and the # of items in those lists. Calculate the impact of the decision on a scale of 0-10. From there the answer should be clear.

BodyMedia Lifestyle & Calorie Management System Review

New Smartphone App from BodyMedia

Now that I am cruising along in Phase 4 of the hCG Diet, and training for this Triathlon I have found myself actually on a SeeFood diet. I'm eat'n everything I see. (Not hog wild but def having some bread, potatoes and sugar.) Basically I am not tracking what I eat and am blissfully ignorant to the amount and types of calories I am consuming in a day. This is never good for a food lover like me. I have put on some weight when I should be continuing to take it off. I know some of that weight is muscle but not all of it is.

Attempting to get serious about Phase 4 and following the advice in the book 4-hour body, "No consistent tracking = no awareness = no behavioral change.", I signed up for the BodyMedia Lifestyle and Calorie Management System. It comes with the armband device and a year of online tracking. Since I started watching The Biggest Loser, a million years ago, I have always wanted to try this gadget. On the show they work out at 24 Fitness and call the device "bodybugg." According to Livestrong.com: "Bodymedia has licensed the use of its system to 24 Hour Fitness under the name bodybugg. BodyMedia and bodybugg, are both weight monitoring systems created by the same company with the same patented technology and online support."

I hope it is easy to use and fairly simple and quick to set up. So far I have installed the free app on my iPhone but can't get started because I don't have the device yet. I am already wondering how it will track calories burned while swimming.... hum.... When it arrives I will update this post with my review.
